Hazardous Materials in Welding Fumes to Avoid

Welding hazards are a common problem in every welding operation, whether it is TIG & MIG welding or structural steel fabrication. These hazardous materials are mainly found in welding fumes. They are generally categorized into 3 major types. They include carcinogenic hazardous substances, toxic hazardous substances & respiratory damaging substances. Take a closer look at them. 

Carcinogenic hazardous substances
Carcinogenic hazardous substances are dangerous. They cause malignant tumours. Common carcinogenic substances include:

Lead oxide: It badly affects the kidney. Apart from that, 
gastrointestinal disorders, nausea & nerve damage are also caused by lead oxide. 

Beryllium oxide: It may cause Chronic pneumonia & metal fine fever.

Cadmium oxide: This substance is highly responsible for 
hyperinflation, mucous membrane irritation, etc.

Cobalt oxide: Cobalt oxide mainly causes respiratory organ failure.

Ozone: Membrane irritation and delayed pulmonary edema are mainly caused by ozone

Toxic hazardous substances
After a certain concentration, many toxic hazardous substances cause serious health diseases. These substances include:

Manganese oxide: This is responsible for Parkinson’s disease, respiratory system issues & pneumonia. The nervous system can also be affected by this substance.

Zinc oxide: Zinc oxide causes fever. The nanoparticles of this substance affect the lungs badly. It may cause necrosis.

Copper oxide: Nausea, eye pain diarrhoea, & fever can be caused by copper oxide. It also affects the liver and kidneys of welders.

Nitrogen oxides: respiratory system irritation, pulmonary oedema & Short breath are caused by nitrogen oxide.

Carbon monoxide: This is a poisonous substance causing fainting, fatigue, dizziness, headaches, cardiac arrest, respiratory paralysis, breathing problems, unconsciousness, etc.

Carbon dioxide: This substance is responsible for different respiratory issues, breath shortness, headache, dizziness, unconsciousness, anxiety, etc.

Phosgene: Phosgene causes respiratory failure, pulmonary oedema, irritation, etc.

Respiratory damaging substances
Last but not the least, respiratory system is damaged by hazardous materials that are produced in structural steel fabrication & other welding processes. Substances include:

Iron oxides: Joint disorders, diabetes & congestive heart failure are caused by iron oxides.

Aluminium oxide: It directly affects the lung tissues.

Magnesium oxide: Fever, tickle, irrigation & excessive sweating can be caused by magnesium oxide. It badly affects the lungs.

Titanium dioxide: This substance affects the lungs, kidneys, heart, liver, brain & immune system directly

No doubt, hazardous substances in welding fumes are dangerous. So, it’s necessary to take major precautions to avoid these gases and fumes during the operation. Regular health check-up is also important for every welding experts.
